Latest IBAL survey ranks Tullamore in 10th spot

31st August 2015

Tullamore: 10th out of 40 towns / cities surveyed. Cleaner than European Norms.

Seven out of the ten sites surveyed in Tullamore got the top litter grade and considerable improvement was noted at a couple of sites - The Harbour and Main Street were much better than previous IBAL Anti-Litter surveys. Scoil Iasagain has maintained clean status and Aura Sports Centre and Tesco eXtra were both well presented and maintained.

The Harbour: Grade A. The Harbour was the cleanest this surveyor had ever seen it – credit is due to all concerned and hopefully this top ranking grade can be sustained.

Main Street: Grade A. There were some lovely ‘olde’ style buildings along this street and trees, street signage, bins and paving were in good order – a top ranking site throughout.

Aura Sports Centre: Grade A. (Portarlington Road) The entrance and immediate environment were very fresh in appearance. Litter bin was strategically placed and it was spotless. Bicycle parking was provided and all was in good order here with some nice paving throughout.

Tesco Car Park: Grade A. (Tesco eXtra Tullamore, Portarlington Road) The entrance and immediate environment, including the trolley bays were in very good order and there were two Tesco bins situated just at the entrance. The car park was clear of litter and well maintained.

Recycle Facility at Tesco: Grade B. (Portarlington Road) On first impression all seemed in good order at this recycle facility. However, further investigation highlighted a general discarding of rubbish to the rear of the recycle bins. As the bins are not flush up against a wall a more through approach to cleaning is needed to address same.

Tullamore Train Station: Grade B. (on the Birr Road). The inside of the station was litter free but it was the food related litter beside some seating and under a hedge which brought down the litter grade. There were some lovely colourful flower boxes in the window sills.

Scoil Iasagain: Grade A. The high standards of previous IBAL Anti-Litter surveys have been sustained – this was a clean and well maintained environment.

Dublin Approach Road: Grade A. This was an excellent site – road surface / signage / markings were in very good order and the grass banks were clear of litter.

Enfield Approach Road: Grade A. A good route leading into Tullamore – all aspects of the area surveyed were in good order, creating a positive first impression of the town.

Tullamore to Portlaoise Link Road: Grade B. A moderately littered road with litter on both sides of the road leaving Portlaoise. The stretch of road closer to Portlaoise was in better shape.
