SUMMER SUNDAY FESTIVAL OF RACING AT KILBEGGAN ON BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND
In the words of a song “sunshine on your shoulder’s makes you happy” and this was reflected in the beautiful recent weather and record temperatures, so let’s hope that Kilbeggan races has the same luck with its Summer Sunday Festival starting at 2.20PM on the Bank Holiday weekend. This is the only Sunday race meeting at Kilbeggan this year and an ideal opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of Kilbeggan races with your family and friends.
FESTIVAL OF SUMMER FUN
The Manager Paddy Dunican sums up the occasion “The Summer Sunday Festival provides excitement, colour, and thrilling racing in a brilliant atmosphere, because Kilbeggan Races is a unique social occasion in racing. We believe that it provides the heart-stopping spectacle of horse racing over jumps, with the laid back charm of a rural meeting. We like to think that it’s a great opportunity to meet family, friends from the fun-loving teenager to the fun- loving 80 y/o, with plenty of chat, laughter, and a bit of music. What more can you ask for on a warm Sunday afternoon in the summer?
Admission to the races s include General Adult €15; OAP and Students €12 (children under 16 are free). There is a discounted Summer Party Pack for groups of 10 or more for €22, which includes the Admission Ticket, a Race Card, €5 Food Voucher and €5 Drink Voucher .Tickets are available on-line at www.kilbegganraces.com and you can book online to avail of group discount.
The quality of the racing continues to get better with three sponsored competitive races including the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Handicap Hurdle of €15,000, which is generously sponsored by the European Breeders Fund; the Martinstown Maiden Hurdle of €13,500 sponsored by J.P.McManus , who won with the appropriately named Riviera Sun at the last meeting; and the Mares Hurdle of €13,000 sponsored by the Bloomfield House Hotel, Mullingar. At the last meeting top trainers like Willie Mullins, Noel Meade, and Henry De Bromhead won four of the seven races, therefore expect plenty of competitive racing next Sunday.
After racing(?) there will be a great opportunity to hear the very successful band The Afters who have played with many great singers and bands over the years. The Afters are a cover/party band and have been playing festivals & parties for over 10 years including sharing the stage with Niall Horan, Kodaline, The Script, Shane McGowan, Van Morrison, Kaiser Chiefs, Nathan Carter, The Saw Doctors etc ; they have been on Celebrity Come Dine With Me, Xpose (TV3), Saturday Night with Miriam, and some of their music featured in movies like The Hardy Bucks, The Lone Ranger(Johnny Depp) and in a Sky Arts documentary about Shane McGowan. Their programme covers all kinds of great music over five decades. Recently, they played at Today FM’s Christmas Party, The Olympia, Leopardstown Racecourse, and they have been praised by many from Bressie to Rosanna Davidson for their brilliant music and entertainment. This will be an opportunity to have a party in a great atmosphere, especially with no work on the Bank Holiday Monday!
MUSIC TO THE EARS OF PUNTERS
It was highlighted before that when Willie Mullin’s sends horses to win at Kilbeggan that they should be followed, as they often go on to win good races. In that case two horses that were successful at the April meeting should be put into your notebook. Nessun Dorma is probably one of the most famous pieces of classic music in the world having been sung by everyone from Pavarotti to Bocelli and it was music to the ears of punters, when it won at 2/1 ridden by Paul Townsend. The trainer & jockey completed a double when Robin Des Foret (4/7), who had his third success in a row, beat a previous Kilbeggan winner Hidden Charmer. The bumper was won by Alan Fleming’s Champayne Lady and it was a good race as the third horse Major Destination has since won a bumper for Noel Meade beating a previous Kilbeggan winner Hidden Charmer.
The Summer Sunday Festival is a great opportunity to get out there on a Bank Holiday weekend and simply enjoy yourself in good company, have that family get-together, meet your school friends before the summer break, or just make it a special occasion. Make sure to arrive early, as the first races is at 2.20PM.
