15th November 2016

Christmas Lights ceremony 2016

Press Release

Tullamore Christmas Project group is a partnership initiative between the Tullamore Business groups, Offaly County Council and Tullamore Chamber of Commerce, today announced its festive programme of events for the Christmas season.

Christmas in Tullamore is special time and this festive season is going to be extra magical with the introduction of two Christmas Markets. The market plans to offer a unique selection of local hand crafted gift items, accessories, woodcraft, preserves as well as seasonal foods and drinks.

The first of our Christmas Markets will take place on Sunday 27th November 2016 in Market Square from 12am and will coincide with the celebrations of switching on the Christmas Lights for the town. It’s not officially the Christmas season until the lights are switched on and this year we once again intend to delight with a host of activities. This year’s celebrations will commence at 5.30pm at the Tullamore Train Station where Santa will parade into our town lead by the Tullamore Town Band and the Pipe Band before finally arriving at Market Square/ Harbour Street. Our very own, actor Sam Keeley from Tullamore has kindly agreed to take time away from his busy filming schedule to join the celebrations by switching on the Christmas Lights. The evening promises to be a magical one for all the family as The Offaly County Council and the St Mary’s Youth Centre Choirs sing into the evening. For the little ones there will be surprises galore around every corner with our street entertainers providing plenty of fun and little treats.

The second of the planned Christmas Markets will take place in O'Connor Square on Sunday 18th December from 11am to 7pm. This market will showcase the best of local produce, crafts & gifts. Everyone is encouraged to support this event and as the Tullamore Christmas Project group intends to build this occasion into an annual larger event.

A letter received into our offices this week, "Santa wrote I am so delighted to get the opportunity to visit the good boys and girls again. I always’s look forward to meeting the good people of Tullamore and to reading all the lovely letters that I get in the post. It’s now time to get busy writing your letters boys and girls and don’t forget to put them in my giant magical post box in O' Connor Square.

Speaking on behalf of The Tullamore Chamber of Commerce, Anne Starling said that Christmas is an exciting time for families to come together. We have seen many improvements in our town after the past difficult few years and I would like to encourage everyone to think local this Christmas. Shopping local will keep much need business in our town and protect and build a stronger town centre for future years. Our Christmas Quid vouchers are the perfect gift and are accepted in many businesses throughout the town and I would encourage people who perhaps are unsure of buying a present for a loved one, to consider buying a Tullamore Quid’s Voucher. The Tullamore & District Chamber would like to wish our business partners a prosperous Christmas and would also to extend our sincerest best wishes to all of you over the festive season. Let’s make it a magical one
