Chamber Welcomes Tullamore Gold in Entente Florale & Tidy Towns

26th September 2016

The Tullamore & District Chamber of Commerce have lauded the efforts of the Tullamore Tidy Towns committee down through the years and welcomes the recognition this week after Tullamore was awarded ‘Gold’ in the Entente Florale and the Supervalu Tidy Towns competitions.

For many years the Tidy Towns committee has worked tirelessly in the background with a small team of dedicated volunteers and made significant progress in making its mark on the national competition. As part of the Tullamore & District Chamber of Commerce’s three year plan, the group set an ambitious goal of focussing on working with the various groups to aim to win the competition over the next few years. This year, more than ever, the Tullamore business group coordinated a number of key projects to get more businesses involved and to improve the overall appearance of the town. Regular clean-ups of highlighted blackspot areas, painting of railings and street furniture and publicising the Tidy Towns project to businesses has help increase the profile and collective aim of the Tidy Towns. One of the key projects this year was to add colour and vibrancy to the town centre with the group spearheading the hanging baskets which adorned many businesses on the main streets of the town. The ‘Hanging Baskets’ project involved the voluntary effort of many businesses, groups and individuals working together. The Chamber with the support of John Leavy of Centra coordinated the hanging of over 350 baskets outside over 200 businesses. The brackets were supplied by Cloonan’s Hardware and installed by FitItOut free of charge. The baskets were grown and cultivated in Ferbane by Moore’s Nurseries at a discounted rate. This collective project along with Offaly County Council who committed to watering the baskets, signifies the growing community spirit, culminating in a colourful display along the towns streets which was commented on by locals and visitors alike.

‘The Chamber are committed to supporting and developing our standing in the Tidy Towns and see it as a key project bringing together the various groups in the town’, commented Loughnan Hooper, Chamber PRO. ‘Although the Chamber is happy with the support and feedback from businesses, we are focussed on learning from the success of this year and are already planning even better projects for 2017 and beyond, with a solid goal of winning the Tidy Towns Competition outright in the coming years’.
