Chamber Call for the Retention of Midlands Gateway Status for Tullamore

15th February 2016

Retention of Midlands Gateway status for Tullamore should be a key General Election topic.

The Tullamore Chamber of Commerce Executive are calling for their members and for all constituents to place the crucial issue of the linked Gateway town status for Tullamore on the agenda for the General Election.

The National Spatial Strategy set forth an ambitious infrastructural investment plan to facilitate strategic population growth and sustainable economic development in Gateway towns. The funding failed to fully materialise as a result of the severe economic depression, but Tullamore continues to benefit from future-proofing investments which did materialse in the areas of waste water treatment, roads and civic amenities.

The National Planning Framework 2016 will replace NSS. Preparatory work on that plan has already commenced. Tullamore & District Chamber of Commerce seeks to ensure the TDs which are elected from Offaly (a) fully understand the importance of Tullamore’s designated status, (b) prioritise the retention of that status under NPF 2016, and (c) are prepared to hit the ground running on this issue as soon as they take office.
