Offaly golfer takes on the world's best golfers at Augusta

The sports mad county of Offaly in the centre of Ireland is getting behind local hero Shane Lowry for this weekend's US Masters in Augusta.

When Shane was a kid, he spent my summers playing pitch and putt on the local course with his mates in Clara, County Offaly. It was there, in Clara, 12 miles from Tullamore, that Shane learned the basics and honed his short game.  When he turned 12.he started playing golf proper and taught himself how to play. 

Having achieved national success in 2009, being the first amateur to win the Irish Open, Shane has reached new heights in the last year capturing the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational by two strokes over Bubba Watson.

Local Tullamore pub, The Brewery Tap, a watering hole Shane has been known to frequent on home visits, is confident Shane is capable of taking home the biggest prizes in golf, including the US Masters.

The US masters tees off Thursday and Shane is grouped with Angel Cabrera and JB Holmes in the opening two rounds.
