Tullamore One Of Cleanest Towns In Country, IBAL League Finds

TULLAMORE is snapping at the heels of the leading contenders for the title of cleanest town in the country, and ranks joint 5th in Ireland with Wexford.
The latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) league has placed the town in the top five out of 40 towns and cities surveyed, and it is now cleaner than European norms. In August 2014, the town was ranked in 6th position overall, having risen from 8th place at the start of the year.

The An Taisce inspectors who carried out the survey on behalf of IBAL congratulated Tullamore stating;
'This was again an excellent result for a town that was littered in the past but has become a front runner in the League. The surveyor noted that there was a generally improvement in sites overall. All the approach roads were very good and this was sustained for almost all of the sites surveyed. The Main Street was very fresh looking and well maintained. Tesco Car Park and Aura Sports Facility were also very good.'

Chairman of Tullamore Tidy Town's Committee, Cllr Tommy McKeigue thanked everyone for putting in the effort.
'There are just a few people who won't dispose of rubbish and they are creating a headache for the Tidy Towns and the Council. There are two places Chancery Lane and the back of Clontarf Road. But we will soldier on we are gaining,' said Cllr McKeigue.

Details of the inspectors comments are below.
Main Street: Grade A. This was a very good site. The wide paving created a sense of space and the overall impression was of a clean, fresh looking and well maintained environment.
Tesco Car Park: Grade A. (Portarlington Road) All aspects of the area surveyed were in very good order - entrance, paving, trolley bays and car park surface. The road surface / signage / markings were in very good order and there was a complete absence of litter throughout.
Aura Sports Facility: Grade A. (Portarlington Road) This was a well presented site - no litter in evidence.
The Harbour: Grade A. A regency bridge was very much a feature at this site - it was a good site and all elements were in good order.
Scoil Iosagain: Grade A. The area of the school visible from the outside was in very good order. The high levels of cleanliness of previous IBAL Anti-Litter surveys has been sustained.
Recycle Facility at Tesco Car Park: Grade A. A rainbow of clothing recycle bins - all supporting different charities. The bins themselves were in good order and the area to the front of the bins was spotless.
Clara Approach Road: Grade A. The overall impression created here was of a fresh and well maintained environment. There was an absence of litter in the area surveyed and all aspects were in good order.
Tullamore College: Grade C. The car park area was in good order but what brought down the overall ranking was the accumulation of litter at the base of some shrubbery - heavy levels of fast-food wrappers with lower levels of plastic bottles, cans and sweet papers.
Tullamore to Kilbeggan Link Road: Grade A. The road surface and markings were in good order and there was a virtual absence of litter along this route. Much of the route runs through Offaly but there wasn't any discernible difference between the two noted.

The top four towns in this year's IBAL league are Kilkenny, Cavan, Longford, and Tramore.
The news has also been welcomed by local councillor Declan Harvey who aid tribute to the Tidy Towns committee and local businesses and individuals who had put their shoulders to the wheel to ensure Tullamore's success in the league.
