eircom Briefs Tullamore Chamber on its Fibre Roll-out Plan

8th December 2014

Speaking at the meeting with Tullamore Chamber this evening, Paul Bradley, Eircom’s Director of Corporate Affairs said “Through Tullamore & District Chamber of Commerce, we have a great opportunity to reach out to businesses.

Over 8,400 premises in Tullamore can already avail of our superfast broadband with download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20Mbps. Quality broadband is a must for all businesses, and customers using Eircom’s network will see a 6 to 10 time improvement in their broadband speeds, transforming their online experience at an affordable price, with subscriptions starting at €25.00 per month for businesses”.

Eircom already operates the largest fibre network in Ireland with more than one million homes and businesses passed. Over 10,000 additional premises are being brought online each week, and the company is adding more than 15km of fibre every working day to the network. When completed in mid-2016, the network will reach 1.6 million homes and businesses across Ireland, representing 70% of all homes and businesses in the country. Further good news for Tullamore is that, along with Edenderry, the town will be included in eircom’s rollout of Fibre to the Home, which will bring speeds of one gigabit per second to 66 communities around the country. This rollout has begun and will continue until 2017.

Chamber Secretary, Niall Mulligan, said "We are grateful to Paul Bradley for travelling to brief us in person. It is welcome news that the phased rollout of the open access fibre broadband infrastructure in Tullamore is almost complete, to schedule and under budget. We trust that the rest of the population centres around Offaly will be brought up to par by mid-2016 at the latest.
We are delighted to see that Tullamore can look forward to speeds of up to 1Gbps by 2017. In respect of the productivity benefits quality broadband infrastructure offers businesses, Tullamore will no longer be at a disadvantage when competing for inward investment. Together with recent and ongoing water, sewage and transport upgrades, Tullamore’s key infrastructure is now among the best in the country, and is geared for growth.”
